Tutoring/Test Re-takes
Tutoring is available before school Monday mornings from 7:45 to 8:15 a.m. Students are responsible for signing up with me prior to attending. Students must also come in during tutoring time in order to re-take a test. Test corrections to satisfy test retakes will not be sent home. In order to re-take a test, the student must have originally scored below a 79%, and the student may only receive a maximum score of 79% for the re-take. Quizzes cannot be re-taken to improve scores.
Homework
Students are required to record homework assignments in their agendas. Parents are encouraged to check student agendas frequently, especially during the first weeks of school, to ensure that students are recording homework properly. As a backup, parents are encouraged to check the homework calendar found on my website. However, the responsibility for proactively recording and completing the homework rests with the student. Students should expect homework nightly, weekends included. Some assignments are given with a due date that follows days later. Students are given those assignments with the intention of spending some time nightly on the work. Please do not wait until the last minute to avoid the perception of being “overloaded”. In the event that students do not understand or have trouble with an assignment, the students should contact me directly either through email or before class. While I am happy to answer parent questions regarding Language Arts class, I am a strong believer in students taking responsibility for their work.
Late/Make-Up Work
If a student was present and missing work, they have up to 5 school days to earn 50% credit. However, after those 5 days, the maximum a student can earn on the assignment is 10% credit. Late work will be accepted no later than one week prior to the quarter end. Late homework scores will not exceed 50%. Late projects will lose one grade per day. If a student is absent, he or she should take the initiative to find out and complete the make-up work or to make-up any test/quiz missed. The first stop for make-up work should be the homework calendar on the website. The student will have seven calendar days to make-up work, including tests, due to an absence with no penalty to their grade. After one week, the work will be considered late and will follow the late work policy. In the event of an extended absence, please have your student contact me to arrange a completion schedule for outstanding work. Provided that the student meets the agreed upon timeline, the work will not be considered late.
Conferences
A parent/teacher conference can be scheduled by contacting our counseling department at 980-343-3670. Conferences are held during our planning periods on Wednesday.
Curriculum
Each quarter we will cover various Common Core State Standards for Reading, Writing, Speaking and Listening, and Language, a book study, and vocabulary. Students will not be issued their textbooks. A class set is kept in the classroom. In the event that a homework assignment is given from the textbook, an online version is available at my.hrw.com. Students will receive their login the first week of school.
Vocabulary
All classes will participate in regular vocabulary instruction with on-going assignments and regular assessment. Vocabulary textbooks are not issued to students. Students may find copies of the unit lists on my webpage. There will be a vocabulary section on each reading test throughout the year. Students are required to create study aids for each unit, directions for which will be given during the first weeks of school. The most important key to successful mastery of vocabulary is consistent practice. A minimum of ten minutes per night is an absolute necessity for student mastery.
Book Studies
Students will be completing multiple book studies with books provided by our media center. Students are not required to purchase the books; however, books may certainly be purchased in order for the student to annotate in their own book. Students are given at least a week’s notice of the date on which they need to have the book in class. It is important that students keep up with the reading schedules assigned, as reading accountability quizzes are given during the course of the book study.
Students will be expected to read large parts of these books independently with classroom instruction to help support their understanding. Students will also participate in written assessments regarding the books. Books will not be provided to students who have lost or forgotten books.
Writing and Grammar
These will also be a major focus of 7th grade Language Arts. Students will create a Writer’s Notebook in the classroom. Students will participate in Daily Grammar Practice during the week, with classroom instruction to advance their knowledge of sentence structure and proper grammar technique.
Thank you for taking the time to understand our class prospectus. I am looking forward to an outstanding year together!
